The Dymes Cup - A Brief History

The Cup was presented by our founding Commodore, Frank Rawling Dymes, in 1910.
It cost 80 Guineas which was a considerable sum at the time.

The cup was initially won in 1910 by the 32 foot Perth Rater "Lynx", with a part Albany crew under metropolitan skipper Frank Gracie.  In the early days of the competition, many Perth yachts came to Albany for the event (usually as deck cargo on ships.)

In 1911,12 and 13 the cup was won by Lionel Austin (Stan's father) sailing ary captain W.J.Rae's boat "Gannet". Under the terms of the deed of gift, ownership of the cup then passed to Mr Austin.

Commodore Dymes then donated another cup of similar value, but being wily gentlemen, stipulated that it could only be won outright if a boat and skipper won it 5 times in succession or 7 times in total.  Fortunately for our club's traditions, this has never occurred.

In 1981, the Austin family donated the original cup back to the club to be raced for by "A" division yachts so that the replacement could be raced for by "B" division yachts.  The Austin family stipulated that the original cup was to be for perpetual competition and did not intend or stipulate that it could ever be won outright.

Over the years, the Dymes Cup has continued to be the most sought after trophy on the club's sailing calendar.  In recent years, fleets other than divisions 1 and 2 have raved for smaller "Dymes Cup Day" trophies.
